Training and Accreditation

The NBN has been working with the National Development Team, Paradigm, In-Control and the Care Services Improvement Partnership to design training programmes that cover the needs of everyone from a single disabled person wishing to do everything for themselves to a professional paid broker providing a full or part-time service.

Our London Regional Co-ordinator, Andrew Carpenter has been working with colleagues locally to accredit support brokerage training. Further details from Andrew on 07796 884468 or email him at andrew.carpenter@nationalbrokeragenetwork.org.uk

The NBN training framework has been designed to provide a core for all NBN approved training.

NBN regional programme: 5 day course followed by ongoing supervision and local seminars

Days 1 and 2: The first two days are suitable for anyone with an interest in an introduction to principles and practice. Participants wishing to proceed to days 3 and 4 complete a one month reflective journal on their experiences supporting at least one person/family in a number of brokerage roles.

Days 3 and 4 are reserved for participants who wish to learn more about becoming paid or unpaid full or part time professional brokers.

Day 5 acts as a recall and review day.

The course allows one month between each set of two days for practical support work which can be focused either on the participants own support needs if they are a disabled person or family carer or for someone the participant is already supporting. Participants keep a practice journal and return with 'live' issues that are then built into the training sessions to ensure practical outcomes.

The NBN training model does not finish after the initial five days - the full programme should include ongoing local individual and peer supervision from a competent broker or similar who can provide practical assistance as well as person centred, supportive supervision. Brokers should also attend a minimum of four knowledge based seminars per year organised by your region or at national level to ensure a constant update in the quality of information, advice and guidance services.

We introduced the idea of 'Kitchen Table' courses in Cambridge in 2009 following requests from disabled people and family carers for a programme that fitted both stamina and availability. Kitchen Table courses are hosted by one of the participants in their own home and run for a series of half days to suit individual learning preferences.

Training providers: if you would like to add your course to the NBN website, please send us details.

National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) Programme

The NDTi follows the same 5 day training framework but is designed specifically for people who wish to work as paid brokers.

The NDTi's five-day course is designed to offer intensive training for people who want to become paid independent brokers.  The training is usually commissioned by councils wanting to develop local broker resources, and includes assessment to support local broker accreditation.  Councils may be willing to 'sell' a few places on the training to other individuals, for a charge the council decides. (For more info about planned course that may have places available, please contact Steve Dowson, sdowson@ndti.org.uk.)

The NDTi is also working in partnership with the NBN to provide a programme of training opportunities across the UK regions.

More information on training provided by NDTi can be found at www.ndti.org.uk

Paradigm development programme

The extended Paradigm course in 2007-8 was aimed at a change management and practitioner level and includes NBN trainer input. Information on the course run by Paradigm can be found at http://www.paradigm-uk.org
